My Curse
woke up screaming again. Its still dark outside, probably just after midnight. Once again I had that dream…
I am James Lee Cahn, let me explain, I had not always been this way. I had always been a normal boy. Yet lately I've been having these horrible, unimaginable nightmares. It all started about five days after my 16th birthday on the twentieth of December. I remember it was a cloudless beautiful night. I was with my gorgeous
girlfriend Evelyn. She is also 16, but she's slightly younger because her birthday, oddly enough, was the day after my own birthday. We met the first day of school. We were the only freshmen in English Literature AP. True we are both smart, but I have to admit she I much smarter than I. We sat next to each other and quickly hit it off. We both liked poetry and we both enjoyed reading Edgar Allen Poe, and other books and stories like his. We also had the same interests in nearly everything, except well math, she's a whiz at mathematics. So I guess you could say we sort matched.
Anyways, as I was saying, I was spending quality time with her on Christmas night. We had already gone through our previous engagements to our families, spending Christmas with them, separately, exchanging gifts, etc., and they allowed us to go out together that night for a nice walk through the park. It was late so we decided to walk around the perimeter of the park then head home. As we walked nearer to the far side of the park, which was bigger than we thought, I noticed that the moon, which was abnormally big and full, was overhead and it was beautiful. I pointed it out to Evelyn and she decided for the both of us to just sit on the swings and admire it for a while then head home. When we left I walked her home hand in hand, and kissed her goodbye.
It was that very night when my nightmares started to occur. At first it was vague. I dreamt a colorless dream where I was walking through a dark gray forest. It was cloudy until one point in which the clouds started to break away and the intensely bright, full moon started to show though. Beautiful you might say but for some strange reason I didn't think it was beautiful or dazzling for that matter. I feared it! At the time I did not know why I just did… Then it happened. The moon was in full view and I convulsed and shuddered and was on all fours. I Started morphing which was painful considering it was a dream and I howled, then bolted up in my bed and I realized it was a dream… or a nightmare? I found it amusing somehow and grinned at it realizing what it was about. Though, I did feel a slight tingling sensation throughout my body still.
The next morning I told Evelyn about it, she listened to the whole story, like she usually did, then, with a smirk, she says, "Wow Jam-IE! that's such a strange dream, but somehow believable because, remember, we spent last night together moon gazing so you were probably, maybe, afraid of the moon!". A little irritated at that, I said, "Don't call me 'Jam-IE'! And scared of the moon are serious!? Wow. But why, I mean, I was never before afraid of the moon?" She responded, "Well maybe your not afraid, but maybe, a lycanthrope would." "What smarty-pants? English please?" I asked. At this she laughs that laugh, that she always laughs, when she knows she stumped me once again and says, "A werewolf."
That happened about a month ago. Now, I had the dream again, and woke up screaming, no, now that I think of it, I woke up, Howling? Troublesome. And what's worse is I got further in the dream this time, and before I awoke from the dream I remember the worst. I did become a werewolf, but that was not the bad part that startled me. It was the vision of me, in wolf form, hunting down, and mauling Evelyn's neck that frightened me.
I got out of bed, since I was too shaken up, I needed to walk it off. I turned to my left and I was drawn to my window. I walked to it and open the blinds. My heart sunk. Quickly, I backed away.
"Well it must be a coincidence?," replied Evelyn the next morning after I told her what happened last night. "Yea maybe, But it's weird that I'm having these dreams on full moons." at this she said, "Well it is strange, but its still a coincidence, I think."
I was still not convinced. I went to my parents and told them of this reoccurring nightmare. As I told them my father's eyes widened. "What's wrong?" I asked.
